Depleted
SHUTDOWN STATE / IMMOBILIZED
Your nervous system is in a Depleted State. In this state, your body is craving rest and it’s main focus is conserving energy. When you’re Depleted, everything can feel heavy, flat, or distant. You might feel disconnected from your body, unmotivated, or emotionally numb. Even rest doesn’t always feel refreshing, and it can seem like your inner spark and motivation is gone. This does not mean you’re lazy or weak — it’s your system trying to save energy after being overwhelmed for far too long.
This may show up as:
Feeling depressed, fatigued, burned out, or unmotivated
Often putting off self-care activities
Feeling numb, disconnected, or “checked out”
Difficulty feeling joy, excitement, or interest in things you love
Asking yourself things like, “What’s the point?”
Low energy, even after sleeping for hours
Staying at home and isolating from others
What Your Body Is Asking For
In a Depleted state, your body is craving restoration and nourishment… not intensity. Light, flowing movement, gentle stretches, and breathing practices can help reconnect you to your body, and to your thoughts and emotions. Focus on slow, deliberate movement that brings sensation back into your body and helps you feel alive again. Being in this state is often a sign to trust and surrender; it’s an invitation to pay attention to your inner world. Something may be out of alignment in your life, whether it’s a relationship, friend/acquaintance, career, environment/living situation, or even your community.
Some ways to do this:
Gentle self-massage (such as Qigong Yin Massage)
Slow breathing (such as a Qigong Tonifying Breath)
Yin-style yoga stretches
Connecting with nature, animals/pets, or loved ones
Qigong Yin Massage
This Qigong movement is helpful for:
Calming and soothing the Vagus nerve, which is responsible for activating the “Rest-and-Digest” part of the autonomic nervous system
Helping you reconnect to your body’s sensations gently
Getting out of the head and into the present moment
Preparing for a restful sleep
Qigong Tonifying Breath
This Qigong form of breathing is helpful for:
Gently energizing the body without intense movements
Feeling grounded and present
Connecting to the sensations in your body without judgment
Ready to create the movement routine your body actually wants?
When your body is stuck in a depleted state, not all movement is helpful. Without understanding your nervous system, it’s easy to choose practices that keep you stuck in exhaustion and burnout instead of bringing you back to balance.
In my online course, Movement as Medicine: Tools to Regulate Your Nervous System & Calm Your Mind, you’ll learn how to recognize your nervous system state and use the right kind of movement to help your body feel safe again — so you can return to clarity, confidence, and grounded presence.
